Interesting fact

The 2005 Westward Journey Nickel series, which includes the "Bison" design, was the first time in the history of the Jefferson Nickel that a new design was introduced without featuring a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, who the coin is named after. This change was made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which is depicted on the reverse side of the coin.
