Comment
This Fine Silver 5 cent coin commemorates Waitangi Day, the national day of New Zealand, which marks the 150th anniversary of the initial signing – on 6 February 1840 – of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is regarded as the founding document of the nation. The first Waitangi Day was not celebrated until 1934, and it was made a national public holiday in 1974. The design of the reverse has a stylised depiction of the Kotuku or White Heron, chosen as the symbol of the 1990 anniversary celebrations.Coin also issued in copper-nickel.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is considered the founding document of New Zealand. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6, 1840, between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, and it established a British governor and government in New Zealand, while also recognizing the rights of the Māori people to their land and culture. The coin's design features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a depiction of the Treaty of Waitangi on the other side, with the inscription "Treaty of Waitangi 150th Anniversary" in both English and Māori.
