Comment
The new currency was introduced by the RBZ (Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe) on December 18, 2014 in order to replace a multi-currency environment (Rand, USD, Euro) and to address the acute shortage of small change as a result of the hyperinflation which peaked in 2009. The newly issued currency was pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar.Interesting fact
The 5 Cents (Bond Coin) 2014 from Zimbabwe is unique in that it was issued as a bond coin, meaning that it was issued as a form of debt security rather than a traditional currency. This was done as a way for the Zimbabwean government to raise funds for various projects and initiatives, and the coin was sold to investors with a promise to repay the face value of the coin plus interest at a later date. This makes it an interesting collector's item for numismatists and those interested in unique financial instruments.
