First project of R.Joly for the 5 centimes. Without the word "ESSAI", obverse struck with the two different, signature "R.JOLY" in relief. Marianne with a cap in the shape of stylized rooster. The coins of this series are private proof of engraver, the engraving was never ordered by the administration. They were all engraved in direct size in steel. The Pattern 5 Centimes coin from France, designed by Joly in 1962, was the first coin to be made of stainless steel. It was a pioneering effort in the use of this material for coinage, and paved the way for the widespread adoption of stainless steel in coin production.
