22.08.2019: // Both the official Belgian Numismatic Catalogue (CBNU) of 2019 and the official mintage tables of the Belgian Royal Mint state that 800,000 and not 180,000 pieces were minted of the 5 centimes in 1908 . It has recently been discussed on Belgian coin collecting groups on Facebook whether the mintage of 180,000 pieces for the year 1908 was correct or not, and as it turns out, most websites seem to have mistakenly copied the mintage of the 5 centimes 1909 (which is 1,800,000) and pasted it into the 'mintage' slot on their websites (including the ones on Numista, but also on IBelgica and even NGC) and, also mistakenly, deleted the last '0' in the number. In conclusion: the mintage of the 5 centimes 1908 is 800,000 and not 180,000. References: AERNOUT, L., Catalogus van Belgische Numismatische Uitgiften, 2019, p. 463.Interesting fact
The 5 Centimes coin from the Belgian Congo features a portrait of King Léopold II, who was the ruler of Belgium at the time and also the owner of the Congo Free State, a large territory in central Africa. The coin was minted between 1906 and 1908, and it was made of copper-nickel, a metal alloy that is resistant to corrosion and has a long lifespan. Despite its small denomination, the 5 Centimes coin was an important part of the currency system in the Belgian Congo, and it was widely used in everyday transactions. Today, the coin is a sought-after collector's item among numismatists and historians interested in the history of the Belgian Congo.
