Comment

Lempira, the present currency of Honduras, was introduced in 1931 replacing the Peso. The Lempira is divided into 100 Centavos.

The currency is named after Lempira, a chieftain of the indigenous Lenca people, who waged war against Spanish occupation of the country during the 16th century. He is revered as a national hero.

Interesting fact

The 5 Centavos coin from Honduras has a unique feature - it's magnetic. This is due to the brass plating on the steel core, which contains a small amount of magnetic material. This feature was added to help distinguish the coin from other denominations and to make it easier for people to identify and handle.
