1. Lempira, the present currency of Honduras, was introduced in 1931 replacing the Peso. The Lempira is divided into 100 Centavos.The currency is named after Lempira, a chieftain of the indigenous Lenca people, who waged war against Spanish occupation of the country during the 16th century. He is revered as a national hero.
2. Sept. 15, 1821, within the Coat of Arms commemorates the day when 5 Central American countries including Honduras gained independence from Spanish rule. 15th Sept is celebrated as the National Day of Honduras.
Interesting fact
The 5 Centavos coin from Honduras was designed by the Honduran artist, Rigoberto Paredes. The coin features the national emblem of Honduras on one side and the denomination on the other. The national emblem includes a shield with five stars representing the five states of the Central American federation, and a bird perched on a branch, symbolizing freedom. The coin's designer, Rigoberto Paredes, was a renowned artist and sculptor who was known for his work in creating monuments and public art in Honduras.
