Comment

Minted in Lisbon, Portugal, as a provincial coin to circulate in the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão.

4000 Réis = 1 Moeda

Coins minted in Lisbon, Portugal, to circulate in the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão. They are smaller in weight and diameter than the other 4000 Réis coins minted in Brazil.
The Law of 12/19/1695 prohibited the circulation of portuguese coins in Brazil and another system was adopted to stabilize the Metropolis' cash. Instead of increasing the nominal value, the intrinsic value was reduced: strong currency for Portugal and weak for Brazil, with the same face value, but with a difference of 10% (or less, in the case of regionals) in weight. In this way, the exploration of the Colony's cash was avoided, since outside it the money was worth less. There was then: National Coin (strong) which, despite being prohibited in the Colony, circulated in it normally; Colonial Coin, 10% weaker in relation to the National Currency; and Regional Coin, even weaker, not being of general circulation in the Colony.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 4000 Réis - João V coin is that it was minted during a time of great economic and political change in Brazil. The coin was issued in 1749, just a few years after the Portuguese colonization of Brazil began to expand inland, and as the country was experiencing rapid growth in agriculture, mining, and trade. The coin's gold content and high denomination reflect the increasing wealth and prosperity of the region during this time.
