Comment

Although also listed as Metlich 82 and Arslan 52-3, there is a variant minted at the fifth officina, marked V in exergue, which is often attributed to Athalaric (c. 526-534), cf. BMC Vandals 28, Ladich p. 45, 119.

Depending on the sources, this coin is listed as being struck under Theoderic (493-526), Athalaric (526-534), Theoderic and Athalaric (493-534), or Anonymous (493-553).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued during the reign of King Totila, who was the leader of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy from 541 to 552 AD. The coin features an image of Totila on the obverse side, and a depiction of the Roman goddess Victory on the reverse side. This coin is a rare example of a standard circulation coin from the Ostrogothic Kingdom, and its design reflects the cultural and political influences of the time.
