Interesting fact
The 4 Reales coin from Charles II's reign (1681-1683) was the first coin to feature the iconic "pillar and waves" design, which would become a hallmark of Spanish currency for centuries to come. The design depicts two pillars representing the Pillars of Hercules, which were said to mark the entrance to the Atlantic Ocean, and waves representing the ocean itself. This design was meant to symbolize the power and influence of the Spanish Empire, which at the time was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world.
