Comment

Likely minted with the dies of an unlisted 4 Ducat piece. During the renovation of a house on Münstergasse in Bern, completed in 1768, 11 pieces of this token were found in 1984; they were used to adjust a window frame.

Interesting fact

The Pattern 4 Ducats was a trial coin minted in 1680 by the City of Bern in Switzerland. It was created as a potential new design for the Swiss Ducat, a popular trade coin used throughout Europe at the time. The Pattern 4 Ducats features a unique design, with a crowned shield on the obverse (front) side and a cross on the reverse (back) side. It was minted in bronze, which was a common metal used for coins in the 17th century. Despite being a trial coin, the Pattern 4 Ducats was never officially adopted as a circulating coin, and only a small number of them were minted, making them highly sought after by collectors today.
