Comment
The regulars of Charles-Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry's colonial army, known as the Voltigeurs canadiens, formed a corps of light infantry that distinguished itself in battle and became one of the most famous units of the War of 1812.In late summer 1812, the American command orchestrated a campaign to capture the city of Montreal. Relying on a well-defined strategy, de Salaberry immediately organized solid defenses that ensured a swift and decisive victory: his Voltigeurs and their native allies routed the invaders, even though they outnumbered them two to one.
Over time, Charles-Michel de Salaberry's exploits became the stuff of legend: it was even claimed that 300 Voltigeurs and their allies repelled 7,000 Americans at the Battle of Châteauguay. Despite the exaggerations, the fact remains that this victory was decisive in the outcome of the conflict. The deeds and heroism of Charles-Michel de Salaberry and his Voltigeurs remain high points of the War of 1812.
