Thanks to their remarkable intelligence and keen senses, wolves (Canis lupus) are intrepid hunters who play an important role in the biodiversity of their region. A guardian of its territory in Canada's remote regions - from Labrador to British Columbia, as well as in the North - the wolf avoids contact with humans and is as discreet as possible. The aura of mystery that surrounds him only adds to the respect and awe he inspires in so many people. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to launch this splendid coin featuring this dominant predator, a symbol of Canada's great wilderness.Measuring up to 90 centimetres in height at the withers and up to two metres in length from muzzle to bushy tail, the wolf resembles a large German shepherd, but with a broader skull. Agile and swift on powerful legs with large feet, it uses its sense of smell to stalk its prey, its acute hearing to spot it from afar, its piercing eyesight to pick up the slightest movement... and its powerful jaws to leave nothing but crumbs.
Did you know that?
- The wolf is the largest of the wild dogs, and many scientists believe it to be the distant ancestor of the domestic dog.
- To pursue larger prey, such as deer, mountain goats, elk, moose, caribou or bison, wolves hunt in packs of up to 12 members.
- Obeying the signals of the pack leader (or alpha male), the wolves take turns stalking their prey to exhaustion, or leading it to a predetermined ambush site.
- Wolves trot at speeds of up to 16 kilometers per hour, reserving their 70 kilometer-per-hour speed peaks for the final assault on their prey.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a black protective box.
