Comment
The size and power of the Plains bison has been emblazoned intothe North American psyche by Hollywood “westerns.” It’s difficult to believe that a larger, even more imposing beast once roamed this continent. The steppe bison lived on the plains of Eastern Beringia, a large tract of land that emerges between Alaska and Northeast Siberia whenever an Ice Age locks much of the earth’s seawater in ice sheets on land. The steppe bisonhad large imposing horns with as much as a 1 metre (3 ft) spread between the tips on some males. This magnificent beast was hunted by cave lions, wolves and humans. Palaeontologists estimate it died out about 11,000 years ago.
Interesting fact
The Steppe Bison coin features a unique design that showcases the bison in a natural habitat, with a flowing mane and a regal demeanor. The coin's design is so detailed that you can even see the individual hairs on the bison's body. This level of detail is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the Royal Canadian Mint's engravers and designers.
