Comment
Pinzón brothers, naturals of Palos, the port from where the Columbus fleet departed, were seamen who shared the discovery of America along with Christopher Columbus. They were captains of the ships La Pinta and la Niña, while Columbus (captain of the expedition) were of the Santa María. A third brother, Francisco Martín, also participated the expedition as master. In fact Pinzón was the mother's last name, and father's was Yáñez, but they are more referred as Pinzón, and sometimes as Yáñez Pinzón, rarely as Yáñez alone.
Interesting fact
The 30 Pesos (Pinzón Brothers) 1991 coin from Cuba is a unique piece that features the portrait of two brothers, Cristóbal and Juan Pinzón, who were Spanish explorers and navigators. They played a significant role in the discovery of the Americas and are considered national heroes in Cuba. The coin's design is based on a painting by the Cuban artist, Fidelio Ponce de León, and it's a rare example of a coin that honors two individuals who are not political leaders or monarchs.
