The Series we have called “Face Value Exchange Series“ is made up of the issue of one coin each year (in some exceptional years two were issued) from 1994 to the present. We grouped these coins into a single series since they all have the characteristic that, despite being made of silver, they could be obtained at the Bank of Spain at the face value of the coin and all these coins have the same dimensional and composition characteristics (Silver (.925) • 27 g • ⌀ 40 mm). It started with the Peseta System in 1994, with a face value of 2000 Pesetas (approximately 12 Euros) and continued with the Euro System with face values of 12 Euro (2002-2010), 20 Euro (2010-2011), 30 Euro (2012-2021) and 40 Euro (2022-date).

This piece is the first Spanish coin whose design has been chosen by the public since the motive minted on its back was selected as a result of a vote in the social networks of the Prado Museum. More than 80% of the more than 7,100 participants, opted for the detail of the painting of "Las Meninas", compared to the portrait of "Infante Baltasar Carlos" (here you can see it), which was the other work proposed in the survey.
In addition, it presents another novelty, since it is the first time that a coin minted by the FNMT-RCM incorporates a two-dimensional code (or QR), which, when scanned, gives the citizen access to exclusive content, in which he can find historical, technical and artistic information, both of the currency and its manufacturing process, and of Velázquez's work represented in this piece.

Interesting fact

The coin features a portrait of King Philip VI of Spain, which was designed by the Spanish artist, Jorge Marín, and it's the first time that a Spanish king has been depicted on a coin with such a modern and realistic style.
