Comment
The qualities we admire in grizzly bears - strength and ferocity - are also the origin of the expression "mama bear"! Indeed, female grizzly bears are known to defend their cubs fiercely, and will be aggressive to protect them at all costs. However, far from danger, the mama bear is a marvel of gentleness. She looks after her cubs for their first three years, teaching them the important lessons that will ensure their survival. This tenderness between mother and cubs, expressed away from prying eyes, is beautifully immortalized on the reverse of this 99.99% pure silver coin, where multi-faceted engraving gives a geometric, multi-dimensional appearance to the distinctive grizzly silhouette, against a background of traditional engraving.Multi-faceted engraving
This is our second 2 oz coin to feature a multi-faceted engraving, highlighting an innovative approach to three-dimensional art. Rarely used on our pieces, this highly reflective geometric faceted style, applied to the well-known silhouette of a wildlife species, enhances the motif and transforms it into something totally unique.
A blend of finishes
So many details would have been lost in the shuffle if the finish had been uniformly glossy... That's why we chose to depict this family scene using a variety of finishes that bring depth and perspective to the motif.
A motif echoed on the obverse
On the obverse of the coin, laser-engraved polygons echo the reverse, forming a dynamic recurring motif behind the effigy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Grizzly bears have one of the lowest reproduction rates among Canadian land mammals. Female grizzlies give birth to their first cubs at around five to eight years of age; it may then be four to five years before the next pregnancy (the average life expectancy for a grizzly is 20 to 25 years).
Although grizzlies are omnivores, their diet varies from one individual to another, depending on the environment and available resources. In general, during the time spent with her cubs, the mother teaches them to dig up roots or forage for carrion in spring; to gorge on berries and grasses in summer, then salmon later in the season; and to catch insects and larvae in autumn. All Canadian grizzlies hibernate. They therefore need to store as much fat as possible in late summer and early autumn.
