Comment
The Northwest Territories is 150 years old.In 2020, we celebrate a great anniversary: 150 years ago, in 1870, the acquisition of Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory gave birth to Canada's first territory. The flora, fauna, landscapes and diversity of the peoples of the Northwest Territories have made it a cherished part of the Canadian family. This 2 oz. fine silver coin marks the 150th anniversary of the Northwest Territories' entry into Confederation. The motif on the reverse is an artistic representation of the pride inspired by the territory's short cultural history, and the importance of this nurturing land to its peoples since time immemorial.
"Canada's Northwest Territories is culturally rich. Aboriginal peoples, whose presence here goes back a long way, have cultures that continue to take root, sustaining traditional heritage, languages, arts and ways of life. Artworks like this beautifully illustrated piece highlight both our diversity and our unity, and will radiate this vision for generations to come."
Johanna Tiemessen, Arts and Crafts Program Manager, Government of the Northwest Territories
Did you know?
Canada has two official languages, English and French, but the Northwest Territories has nine more, for a total of 11 official languages: Chipewyan, Cree, Tłı̨chǫ, Gwich'in, North Slavey, South Slavey, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun, Inuinnaqtun, French and English.
In 1870, the Northwest Territories was a vast expanse of land stretching from northern Quebec to western British Columbia. It encompassed what we know today as the Yukon, Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as parts of Nunavut, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. The territory expanded further north when the Arctic Islands were added in 1880.
The boundaries of the Northwest Territories changed over time, as new territories and provinces were created. In 1905, the Northwest Territories still represented 34% of the country's land mass. The last major boundary change took place in 1999, when Canada's third (and last) territory, Nunavut, was created.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the $30 Elizabeth II (Northwest Territories) 2020 silver coin from Canada is that it has a unique reverse design that features a polar bear, which is a symbol of the Northwest Territories, standing on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the waters of the Arctic Ocean. The design is meant to represent the region's natural beauty and wildlife, and it was created by Canadian artist Glen Loates.
