Comment

The economic hardships of the Great Depression depleted Canada's military strength and undermined its readiness for war. In addition, the country's war material was in danger of becoming obsolete.

Thanks to a national recruitment effort, over 58,000 men and women enlisted before the end of the month. Coastal defences were reinforced, militia regiments were mobilized, and the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), which trained almost half of the Commonwealth Air Force on Canadian soil, was implemented. In December, units of the First Canadian Infantry Division left Halifax for Great Britain, the first wave of Canadians to serve overseas until the end of the war in 1945.

Meanwhile, the Canadian economy quickly adapted to the war effort, which transformed the country into an economic powerhouse. New industries were created, and existing factories were converted to produce war material. Thousands of aircraft, ships, vehicles, firearms and munitions were produced by Canadian factories, and Canada became the Allies' fourth-largest supplier.

A great addition to any history or war collection.
