The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is a unique federal subject of Russia, unparalleled in its natural and geographical characteristics. Yakutia's integration into Russia dates back to 1632, when Cossack officer Pyotr Beketov established the Lensky Ostrog on the right bank of the Lena River. On April 27, 1922, the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Yakut ASSR) was officially formed by a decree of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.
Located in the northeastern part of the Eurasian continent, Yakutia is the largest region in the Russian Federation, with more than 40% of its territory lying beyond the Arctic Circle. It is also the coldest inhabited region on the planet, with almost the entire continental area being a zone of continuous, ancient permafrost. The natural and climatic conditions in Yakutia are often described as extreme.
Due to long periods of isolation from other ethnic groups, the residents of Yakutia have preserved their traditional ways of life, including fishing, hunting, cattle and reindeer breeding, as well as their distinctive culture and religion.
The economy of Yakutia is predominantly industrial, with its development closely tied to the exploitation of the region's rich natural resources. The diamond mining industry is particularly significant, with Yakutia's diamond-bearing province being the largest in Russia, accounting for 90% of the country's reserves and 95% of its production.
Yakutia is one of the few places on Earth where the pristine purity of nature and an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna have been preserved. The republic encompasses over 30% of Russia's wilderness and more than 10% of the world's.
Yakutia is recognized in UNESCO's World Heritage List through the Olonkho epic and the Lena Pillars Nature Reserve. The ancient epic tales of Olonkho are one of the most treasured cultural heritages of the Sakha people, composed of numerous verses passed down orally through generations. The Lena Pillars, stretching 40 kilometers along the right bank of the Lena River, are often referred to as a "stone forest." This area is also notable for its rock carvings, ancient tools, and the remains of mammoths, ancient bison, and rhinoceroses.
