The Republic of Buryatia, located in the southern part of Eastern Siberia, Russia, is a federal subject of the Russian Federation and part of the Far Eastern Federal District. It was originally established as the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic on May 30, 1923. On March 27, 1991, it was renamed to its current name, the Republic of Buryatia.
Ulan-Ude serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural center of the republic. Buryatia lies to the south and east of Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake, which contains about 20% of the world's highest quality freshwater reserves. Buryatia’s territory encompasses a significant portion of Lake Baikal's shoreline, about 60%. The lake is home to around 2,500 species of animals and fish, 250 of which are endemic.
The Republic of Buryatia is one of Russia’s promising regions for tourism and recreation. Its development as a tourist destination is supported by its convenient geographical location, rich historical, cultural, and natural resources, an established transportation network connecting it to other Russian regions and foreign countries, a stable ecological situation, and the growing popularity of Lake Baikal.
