Date of issue: 18 JAN 2001The School for mathematical and navigation sciences has been founded under the highest Ukase of Peter I on January 14, 1701. This act marked the beginning of the military education in Russia. Five months later the Sukharev Tower was assigned for the Navigation School. The School used to be at that time the only one governmental secular educational establishment. The graduates of the School — first Russian seamen, hydrographers, topographers, engineers, artillerymen, teachers for new educational institutions set up later. They were used not only in the fleet but also in other economic branches.
Interesting fact
The Navigation School coin was part of a series of commemorative coins issued by the Bank of Russia in 2001 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. The coin features an image of a sailing ship and a compass on one side, and the Russian coat of arms on the other. The use of silver in the coin's composition adds to its value and collectibility, making it a sought-after piece among numismatists and collectors.
