The State Memorial and Natural Museum-Reserve of I.S. Turgenev "Spasskoye-Lutovinovo" in the Oryol region is a unique cultural monument and the only memorial museum of the great Russian writer in Russia.
The Spasskoye-Lutovinovo estate was the ancestral nest of Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. He spent his childhood here and loved to return from Europe. Spasskoye-Lutovinovo welcomed famous guests to the writer, including A.A. Fet, M.S. Shchepkin, N.A. Nekrasov, L.N. Tolstoy, and many others.
The development of the estate as an architectural and park complex occurred during the time of Turgenev's second cousin, Ivan Ivanovich Lutovinov. The house he built was grandiose in design and size. In the middle stood a two-story wooden building with columns on the facade, huge windows, about 3.5 meters in size for those times, a grand hall, and numerous rooms. Stone galleries radiated outwards from the central building, each ending with a wooden wing. In 1839, most of the house burned down. The surviving southwest wing (a stone gallery with an adjacent wooden wing) began to be used as the main building. The carved ornate verandas, covered in ivy, small windows of the mezzanine, and porches, the suite of rooms and their interior decoration – all contribute to the atmosphere of Turgenev's time. The furnishings of the house include furniture representing the finest examples of the work of Russian craftsmen from the 18th to the first half of the 19th century. Some of these items are rare examples of applied art. The rooms are filled with the light and warmth of redwood and Karelian birch. In the writer's study, there is a writing desk where the best of Turgenev's works were born, including the novels "Rudin," "Home of the Gentry," "Eve," "Fathers and Sons," "Virgin Soil," and many stories and novellas.
The I.S. Turgenev House-Museum, with its priceless collection of his belongings, preserving the memory of the great Russian writer, is one of the few museums of its kind where the collection consists almost entirely of authentic items that once belonged to the writer's ancestors and himself.
