Date of issue: 24 NOV 1992The Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1724 by Peter the Great. First it was located in some different houses in Saint Petersburg and in 1789 moved to the premises which had been built especially for it by the architect G. Quarenghi in the style of late classicism. The first full members of the Academy used to be M.V. Lomonosov, L. Eiler, V.Ya. Struve, A.K. Vostokov, P.L. Chebyshev, A.M. Butlerov, S.M. Solovyev, B.P. Pavlov and others. Among the foreign members were Voltaire, D. Diderot, E. Kant, I,V. Goethe, C. Darwin, M. Planck, B. Paskal.
