The Svensk Monastery holds a significant place among Russia's renowned ancient monasteries. Situated near the confluence of the Sveni River into the Desna River, it derives its name from this geographical feature. Legend has it that the monastery's foundation dates back to the time when Prince Roman Mikhailovich of Chernigov miraculously regained his sight after praying before the Kiev-Pechersk Icon of the Mother of God, which eventually became the monastery's most revered relic.
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, erected in 1742, stands as a testament to the monastery's rich history. Positioned above the western fair gates, the church takes the form of a five-tier tower. Its architectural design is intricate and symbolic. The first tier, comprised of steps, serves as the foundation, while the second tier features a gallery adorned with semicircular arches supported by low, sturdy pillars. This gallery envelops the floor on three sides, providing access to both the main rectangular nave of the church and the altar annex.
Despite the ongoing renovations, occasional services are still conducted within its hallowed walls, preserving its sacred essence and historical legacy for generations to come.
