The sable, an extremely quick animal with exquisite fur, lives in coniferous forests from the north of the Ural mountains to the Pacific ocean. Russians have hunted the sable, highly valued for its fur, since olden times and the animal is represented in the coat of arms of the old Russian cities of Irkutsk, Yakutsk and Verkhoturye.

Interesting fact

The 1994 Russian 3 Roubles (Sable) silver coin features a unique design that showcases a sable, a small mammal native to Russia, on its obverse side. The coin's reverse side features the Russian coat of arms. The use of a sable as the main design element was chosen to highlight the importance of preserving Russia's natural resources and wildlife.
