Date of issue: 09 APR 1992The space age began on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched the world first artificial Earth satellite. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly into the space on April 12, 1961, and American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first men to land on the Moon on June 21, 1969. By 1992 some 4000 spacecrafts have been launched and more than 1,000 manned flights have been made. The United Nations declared 1992 the International Space Year.
Interesting fact
The 1992 Russian International Space Year 3 Roubles coin features an image of the Mir space station on its reverse side, which was the first modular space station in history and was operated by the Soviet Union and later by Russia from 1986 to 2001.
