Date of issue: 13 DEC 1993Feodor Ivanovich Shaliapin (1873-1938) - an outstanding Russian bass singer, who first performed in Savva Mamontov's Moscow Private Opera House and then in the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres. He was unsurpassed in the leading roles of the Russian classical operas "Boris Godunov", "The Mermaid", "Pskovitjanka" ("The Girl from Pskov") and "A Life for the Tsar". His rendition of folk songs and romances greatly impressed his contemporaries.

The Feodor Shaliapin 3 Roubles coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous Russian opera singer, Feodor Shaliapin. The coin's design features a portrait of Shaliapin on the obverse, and the reverse features an image of a opera stage with a spotlight shining down on a singer, symbolizing Shaliapin's powerful voice and his contribution to the world of opera.
