Comment
At the Lisbon Mint there is no record of minting or shipments of "III Réis" to Madeira. The stamps were made and, as usual, 2 to 5 coins were minted. At the beginning of the 20th century there were clandestine coinages. The "III Réis" coin is, therefore, a pattern.
Interesting fact
This coin was part of a series of pattern coins minted during the reign of King José I of Portugal, who ruled from 1750 to 1777. Pattern coins were experimental coins that were minted to test new designs, metals, or techniques and were not meant for circulation. They are highly sought after by collectors today due to their rarity and historical significance.
