These coins were produced by cutting of Spanish or Spanish Colonial 8 Reales in 4 pieces. Their value was set at 3 real or 18 stuiver. By the Publication of September 21st, 1814 the value was reset at 3½ Reaal or 21 Stuiver. The counter mark legitimized the part as official currency.

These coins are also referred to as 'Driekantje' or 'Guillotine'.
