Struck with prooflike finish for use in the Maundy ceremony and with a dull surface for circulation initially in the West Indies, where it was equivalent to ½ real. The standard weight of this coin was 1/22 troy ounce or 21.8 grains.

Demonetization note: Whilst the circulation strikes have been demonetized, the Maundy issues carry legal tender status and are still being struck to this day with the value updated to decimal pence.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 3 Pence - Victoria (1st portrait; incl. Maundy and Colonial) 1838-1887 coin from the United Kingdom is that it was minted with a unique silver composition of .925, which is higher than the standard .900 silver used in many other coins of the time. This higher silver content gave the coin a distinctive brightness and shine that made it stand out from other coins in circulation.
