Comment
Article nine of the Mint Act permitted the "Coining of gold for private persons". Rumours abound as to why mining magnate Sammy Marks was permitted by Paul Kruger to strike these coins but none can be substantiated. It is not known where the gold came from or who made the blanks but it is believed that at least 215 pieces were struck and they are very scarce. No silver threepences were issued in 1898 and the dies now reside in the SA Mint Museum.(prev. KM#Pn23)
