It is not yet confirmed or agreed at which point silver three pences ceased to be struck for circulation in Britain before their reintroduction in 1845. However, it is widely accepted that this type was struck only for the Maundy Ceremony in a prooflike finish.

Whereas circulating threepence pieces lost their legal tender status in 1971 (and silver ones before that), the prooflike specimens struck for use in the Maundy ceremony have retained legal tender status, with their values updated to decimal pence.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 3 Pence - George III (Maundy issues) 1817-1820 coin is that it was minted during a time when the British Empire was at its peak, and the coin's design reflects this. The obverse of the coin features an image of King George III, while the reverse features a depiction of the crowned shield of the United Kingdom, surrounded by the words "BRITANNIARUM REX" (King of the Britains). This design was meant to symbolize the power and influence of the British Empire at the time.
