Algonquin artist Frank Polson has created a captivating image of a full moon filling the sky as it sits low on the horizon behind a tree at the height of its lush summertime growth. A cluster of four raspberries appears on the left, their succulent flesh portrayed in vibrant red. Black, sliver-like thorns protect the plant’s fresh new blooms that are illustrated with a series of concentric round shapes in black, green and red. These vibrantly coloured shapes, and those on the leaves, represent the spirit world, the universal life force that lies within and animates allthings.

The Raspberry Moon heralds a time of great change. It's the time when raspberry blossoms turn into fruit that teaches us gentleness and kindness. In July, the raspberry bush becomes heavy with fruit. Tear them off the branches and you're sure to prick yourself! It's important to pick raspberries delicately, avoiding the thorns. In this way, the plant is respected, and future flowering is not compromised. The Raspberry Moon teaches us to raise our families in the same way: children thrive when treated gently. In this way, they avoid many thorns on the path of life.Did you know that?
It's likely that the native peoples of North America were the first to grow raspberries. They ate them straight from the bush, crushed them to add to drinks, or added them to meat and soups. Finally, they dried them and put them in cakes, since they were an important source of vitamins during the winter.
The whole raspberry bush is an important remedy for the indigenous peoples of North America. Not only does it relieve coughs, toothache, measles, dysentery and digestive problems, it also promotes women's reproductive health. In addition, its root bark is used as an eyewash for cataracts, its leaves to treat the kidneys, and a mixture made from its root tips to purify the blood and stabilize blood pressure.
In native cultures, plants are accorded great respect, as they nourish, clothe, protect and heal tribal members. Before picking a plant, you must explain why you are doing so and thank it with a gift of tobacco. Without this proof of gratitude, the plant will hide and not let itself be picked.
