Comment
The official floral emblem of the Northwest Territories, the mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), is one of the many wildflowers that signal the arrival of spring in the Arctic. It's in full bloom on this pure silver piece, but don't let the soft creamy hue fool you! This member of the rose family is extremely cold-hardy, with small, leathery leaves and a short stem that keeps it low to the ground in its rocky or windy environment."In creating the series, I wanted to evoke the paintings of yesteryear, with vibrant colors and broad brushstrokes reminiscent of the Victorian style. We added an intricate decorative border, inspired by the fine silver filigree technique, to enhance the flowers with its stylized elements that move and curl across the surface like vines and leaves." - Lisa Thomson-Khan, artist
Did you know?
In June 1957, the Northwest Territories adopted the mountain avens as its official floral emblem, on the recommendation of a renowned botanist and explorer.
This northern species thrives in well-drained soil, but also grows in rocky outcrops and alpine meadows. Its range covers all of northern Canada, extending as far south as the Arctic Archipelago and Alberta.
A marvel with eight petals (hence the scientific name octopetala), the mountain avens loves the sun! The flower pivots to face this star, following its movement across the sky to maximize the amount of rays reflected by the petals towards the yellow center. This sun-oriented growth is a phenomenon known as "heliotropism" (also observed in sunflowers!).
