Comment
The coins of this ruler are the first confirmable coins whose composition included zinc, meaning the composition changed from bronze to brass.According to Hartill, Jiajing's larger denominations were cast in 1544, within the time where casting of the 1 Cash pieces was stopped. 30,000 strings were stored in the treasury (30,000,000 individual coins), and they did not generally circulate.
Interesting fact
The Jiajing Tongbao coin was minted during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming dynasty, who ruled from 1521 to 1567. The coin's design features a unique combination of Chinese characters and symbols, including the inscription "Tongbao" (通寶), which means "circulating treasure," and the imperial title "Jiajing" (嘉革), which means "glorious change." The coin's brass composition and relatively small weight of 9.93 grams also make it stand out among other coins of the time.
