About the story behind "Surviving the FloodIn ancient times, a great flood threatened the survival of the Squamish people. The people gathered in canoes and tied them to Mount En cheki (now called Mount Garibaldi) to prevent them from drifting away. An eagle caught salmon and deposited them in the canoes to provide the Squamish people with food and ensure their survival. This story illustrates the power of teamwork. It also highlights the strength, connection and interdependence between man and nature.
About the artist
In May 2007, VANOC issued a request for proposals inviting artists and designers from the Four Host First Nations to create a unique Aboriginal-inspired work for inclusion in VANOC's merchandising program. An evaluation committee made up of VANOC representatives and external Aboriginal art experts carefully reviewed the responses received to draw up a list of artists to interview. Once the interviews were completed, VANOC announced that Xwa Lack tun had been chosen on the basis of its reputation, creations and previous collaborations.
Xwa Lack tun (Rick Harry) was born and raised in Squamish, British Columbia. His mother was originally from Squamish and Alert Bay (Coast Salish, Kwakiutl Band), while his father was Coast Salish (Squamish) from the Seymour Creek area. Xwa Lack tun received his native name from his father, a hereditary chief. Healing and growth are the main themes in Xwa Lack tun's work. By illustrating the links between traditional stories and his own life, he shows us how to use ancient knowledge to heal ourselves. What fuels Xwa Lack tun's spirit is the dissemination of positive energy and the return of this energy through the children of the Lower Fraser Valley school districts with whom he works. Xwa Lack tun's work is recognized internationally. He has completed projects with galleries across North America, and has been commissioned by private and corporate clients to create all kinds of works, including the famous double doors in yellow cedar, carved on both sides, for B.C. Hydro's head office in Vancouver. In 2001, Xwa Lack tun was invited to Scotland to promote the country's totem pole project. He has returned many times since to demonstrate his unique sculptural techniques. Respect for every person, regardless of race or religion, is the central theme of Xwa Lack tun's work and life.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the "Surviving the Flood" coin is that it was designed by Canadian artist and designer, Stan Witten, who is known for his work on various numismatic pieces. The coin's design features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a scene depicting a family escaping a flood on the other, symbolizing the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
