There's only one place in the world to spot the elusive Spirit Bear: the coast of British Columbia. Where the vast waters of the Pacific Ocean meet the coastal mountains, the Spirit Bear lives among thousand-year-old cedars. Let yourself be charmed by the gaze of the legendary Spirit Bear! This is the third issue in the Royal Canadian Mint's series of enamel-enhanced coins dedicated to local animal species. Previous coins in this annual series have sold out quickly!Seeing a Spirit Bear in the wild is a rare honor, reflected in the exclusive worldwide mintage of this extraordinary coin, limited to 10 pieces. Each piece is carefully chiselled down to the smallest detail, while the selective application of enamel highlights the powerful, bewitching gaze of the legendary Spirit Bear.
Did you know?
Biologists are still trying to understand how this genetic characteristic came about. Some speculate that the Kermode bear's pale coat is an adaptation to the icy environment of the last Ice Age.
The Kermode bear's white fur is an advantage when fishing. Indeed, although at night the Kermode bear and the black bear catch fish at a similar rate, during the day, fish are much less frightened by the white-coated bear than by the dark-coated one, possibly because they don't see the former as a predator. This characteristic gives the Spirit Bear an advantage in the never-ending competition for food.
Almost everywhere the black bear is present, there is a 1-in-1,000,000 chance that a cub will be born with a white coat. This proportion rises to 1 in 40 in central and northern British Columbia, outside the coastal islands where the highest concentration of the subspecies is found. On these islands, it rises to 1 in 10, probably because the Kermode bear has been geographically isolated there for millennia. In particular, on Gribbell Island, the chances of a black bear being white at birth are as high as 1 in 3.
The name Kermode bear comes from the surname of Francis Kermode, a researcher who carried out important work on the subspecies and was Director of the Royal British Columbia Museum.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a maple case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
