Comment
Wild power and beautyThe story of our first national park begins with three transcontinental railroad workers who stumbled upon hot springs at the foot of Sulphur Mountain in Alberta's Bow Valley.
The idea was born to protect the area as a park and tourist destination open to all. In 1885, a 26 km2 area around the springs was officially designated the Banff Hot Springs Reserve. Two years later, the reserve was enlarged and renamed Rocky Mountain Park of Canada, a name it would retain until the current name was adopted in 1930.
Mountains, valleys, glaciers, forests, alpine meadows, rivers... Banff National Park today offers spectacular views over 6,641 km2 to the eight million visitors it welcomes every year, adventurers who come from all over the world to sample the magnificence of the Canadian backcountry.
