Comment
Often found with adjustment marks which do not detract from the value.Although the legends and denominations are in French, these coins are actually British. Because of the agreement to which Mauritius was ceded to Britain, the coinage and language had to remain French. The 25 and 50 sous denominations allowed for them to easily translate into British monetary system and the Spanish dollar, which was the main circulating currency alongside the rupee (2 rupees to 1 dollar)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 25 Sous - George IV ND (1822) coin from Mauritius is that it was minted during a time when the island was still a British colony. The coin features an image of King George IV on one side and a depiction of a sugar cane plant on the other, reflecting the island's history as a major producer of sugar.
