Date of issue: 18 OCT 1996During the Northern War the vanguard of the Russian galley fleet commanded by Peter the Great defeated the Swedish squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral N. Erenskjold and seized all the 10 enemy ships. The battle took place off the Gangut (Hanko) peninsula from July 27 to August 7, 1714. It was the first major victory won by the Russian navy.
