Date of issue: 22 DEC 1997The brown bear (Ursus arctos) inhabits Caucasia, Kamchatka, Siberia, and Primorski Krai in the Far East. The bear reaches 2.5 meters in length and 300 kg and more in weight. It is an omnivorous animal. The number of brown bears is reducing. It is under protection.

The Brown Bear coin was designed by Russian artist, Yuriy Kharuk, and features a majestic brown bear standing on its hind legs, with its front paws resting on a tree trunk. The coin's obverse side features the Russian coat of arms and the inscription "РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ" (Russian Federation) in bold letters.
