Comment

The A4 class of steam locomotives were designed by Nigel Gresley. In 1938 the A4 Class 8P6F 4-6-2 No 4468 was built which was better known as Mallard. On the 3rd July 1938 Mallard, pulling 7 coaches weighing 243 tonnes gross, set out on a high speed braking trial. At Stoke Bank south of Grantham, Mallard set a new world record for a steam locomotive at 126 mph; a record that still stands. Struck by the Royal Mint, this £25 crown was designed to commemorate the Mallard locomotive and its speed record of 126 mph.
