Hafez el Assad (1930/2000), born into a poor Alawite family, studied brilliantly at the military academy.Workshop: Monnaie de Paris
He quickly climbed the hierarchy and became part of the Ba'ath regime. In the prevailing instability, following defeat by Israel in the "6-day war", he organized a coup d'état and seized power in 1970. He ruled the country with an iron fist, allowing no opposition (Hama massacre).
He died in 2000, leaving the country to his son Bachar el Assad.

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Corrective Movement in Syria, which was a significant event in the country's history.
