Comment

Decree No. 21.189 of 02MAY1931:
Extinguish the island soft currency regime (-25% than the mainland currency). In the period 1910-1931, no coins were issued for the islands of the Azores and Madeira. Not later either.
The commemorative coins issued in 1980 and 1986, which the Krausse and Alberto Gomes catalogs identify as coins for these territories, are in reality continental commemorative coins circulated throughout the Portuguese territory (Mainland + Azores + Madeira). They only celebrate the governmental autonomy of these islands.

Mint mark incm 81 means Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda (Lisbon) and year of issue (19)81.

Interesting fact

The 25 Escudos coin from the Azores Regional Autonomy series features a unique design that showcases the region's rich history and culture. One of the most striking features of the coin is the image of the Santa Maria ship, which is depicted on the reverse side of the coin. The Santa Maria was a Portuguese ship that was part of the fleet led by Christopher Columbus during his voyage to the New World in 1492. The ship was wrecked off the coast of the Azores in 1493, and its remains were discovered in the 20th century. The inclusion of the Santa Maria on the coin serves as a reminder of the Azores' connection to the Age of Exploration and the region's rich maritime history.
