Comment
Born on the rivers of China, the dragon boat is at the heart of a spectacular 2,000-year-old cultural tradition steeped in folklore. Beautifully engraved in very high relief and enhanced with selective coloring, the dragon on the reverse of this coin is a timeless and highly symbolic tribute to the Dragon Boat Festival. If you look at its posture among the waves, you can see that its curved neck reproduces the shape of the ornate boats that take part in the annual races.Did you know?
In China, the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu and Tuen Ng, is a traditional festival.
The origin of the festival is mainly explained by the story of Qu Yuan, but in some parts of China it is associated with other legends, notably those of Wu Zixu and Cao E.
The dragon is one of the most powerful creatures in Chinese mythology. It is said to control rain, oceans and all waterways, and its divine energy symbolizes imperial power.
According to some, dragon boat races originated in ancient rituals, during which participants implored dragons to bring down abundant rains to help their crops.
Waves are a symbol of good fortune, which is why they are often painted on the hulls of dragon boats, traditionally made of teak.
While the drummer helps the crew keep the rhythm, it's the helmsman who steers, controlling the direction of the boat.
The first dragon boat race in Canada was held in July 1986, during Expo 86, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a black protective box.
