Comment

This coin belongs to the 2007 Series dedicated to the Popes of the 20th Century.
Pius XII: World War II marked the pontificate of the considered 'Pope of Peace' (1939-1958), despite the fact that his diplomatic mediation failed to prevent the conflict. In September 1943, when Hitler's troops occupied Rome, the Pope transformed the Vatican into a refuge, which earned him criticism from those who accused him of collaborating with Nazism. He proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption in his encyclical 'Munificentissimus Deus' and reformed the liturgy of Holy Week.
