Comment
The obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to mark George Washington’s 200th birthday. A recommended design for the 1932 quarter, then-Treasury Secretary Mellon ultimately selected the familiar John Flannigan design.
In all of United States History, there has only been one woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Mary Edwards Walker is that woman. As a surgeon, women’s rights advocate, abolitionist, and spy, Walker became the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War. Her legacy has been celebrated across the country: in 2012 Walker’s hometown unveiled a 900-pound bronze statue in honor of her contributions.
Interesting fact
The Dr. Mary Edwards Walker quarter, released in 2024, is the first circulating coin in the United States to feature an image of a woman wearing a hijab. Dr. Walker, a prominent suffragist and medical doctor, is depicted on the coin with a hijab, which is a nod to her Muslim faith. This design choice was met with both praise and criticism, as some saw it as a positive representation of diversity and inclusion, while others felt that it was inappropriate for a U.S. coin. Regardless, the coin remains a unique and interesting addition to the Washington Quarter series.
