Eastern prickly pear cactus is a creeping cactus with large, rounded stems, sometimes called "snowshoes," that are covered with long, prickly spines and fine, barely visible hairs. In English, its name is prickly pear, as the cactus produces green pear-shaped fruits that turn red as they ripen in the fall. From June to August, the eastern prickly pear is also covered with large yellow and orange-red flowers so lovely that people take the cactus to plant in their own gardens. This practice, along with habitat loss, are the two worst threats to this endangered plant.Interesting fact
The Prickly Pear Cactus coin was part of a series of coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. The coin features a unique prickly pear cactus design, which is native to Canada and symbolizes the country's diverse wildlife and natural beauty.
