Theme
The First World War was to be the "Der des Ders". The world had never seen the destruction that planes, tanks and submarines could cause. Nor had it ever seen the ravages of trench warfare - the pounding of artillery, the bursts of machine-gun fire and the horror of poison gas.
Over 65 million soldiers from every continent joined the conflict. Historians estimate that almost 10 million people lost their lives and 20 million were wounded. Today, in our tribute to the last surviving veterans, these pieces honor, for posterity, the memory of those who fought. Let us never forget.
